New Vegemite finally gets a name

Kraft Foods Australia/New Zealand on Saturday revealed the name of the new Vegemite: Vegemite iSnack2.0. Launched in July 2009 as Vegemite 'Name Me', Vegemite iSnack2.0 is the result of a three-month nation-wide search that attracted over 48,000 name suggestions for the new Vegemite experience. Kraft Foods Australia/New Zealand drew on Vegemite's history by asking Australians and New Zealanders to come up with the name for the new product, like it did in 1923 when Vegemite was first launched in this country. "With tens of thousands of entries received, it was 27 year old Dean Robbins, from Western Australia, who was the first person to suggest a name that really took the eye of the judges," the company said in a statement on Saturday. Dean, a web-designer, husband and father to two young girls, is the key inspiration behind the innovative new Vegemite name, and could hardly believe his luck when he received the phone call last week. "When I submitted my entry, I didn't consider for a second that I could be chosen. It's been difficult to contain my excitement; I actually leapt out of my chair when I heard the news. To think that I could go down in Australia's history is overwhelming," said Dean. When asked about where his idea for the name came from, Dean said: "It was all a bit tongue in cheek really, the 'i' phenomenon and Web 2.0 have been recent revolutions, and I thought the new Vegemite name could do the same!" Kraft Foods Australia/New Zealand head of corporate affairs, Simon Talbot, said: "The name Vegemite iSnack2.0 was chosen based on its personal call to action, relevance to snacking and clear identification of a new and different Vegemite to the original. We believe these three components completely encapsulate the new brand." Since hitting shelves on July 7, the new Vegemite has already sold over 2.8 million jars. "We believe the success of the new product comes down to continually engaging with Australians to understand what they want. It is also our understanding that Vegemite iSnack2.0 is one of the first Australian food products to be developed as a result of online consumer engagement," continued Talbot. The development of the new Vegemite iSnack2.0 was based on information gathered from more than 300,000 Australians who engaged in the online How Do You Like Your Vegemite census and forums in 2008. Consumers said that they wanted a Vegemite that doesn't require combining it with butter, and one that's easier to spread. The new Vegemite offers a completely different eating experience, and has been created for snacking occasions. As part of recognising Dean for inspiring the new name, he and his family are currently enjoying VIP service, including business class flights, an extended long weekend of five star accommodation, and two September Club tickets to the AFL Grand Final - amongst other things. Some of the more unusual names suggested for the new Vegemite included; Ruddymite, Wow Chow and 2ritemite. The named Vegemite iSnack2.0 will be on supermarket shelves from week commencing October 5. |

Someone at Kraft needs a brain transplant!

Simply a horrible name for this product. What does the internet have to do with a food product??? Whoever decided THAT was the winning name must be laughing in their basement.
"iSnack 2.0" sounds like it was taken out of a large hat and instantly declared the winner.
I would call the New Vegemite "Lousy taste", since it tastes like old milk.
Classic Vegemite is the best!

Congratulations to the winner, however this is not a name i think can really reflect what Australia is about. Vegemite has been an emblem of our culture for decades, and Kraft took the risk of changing the recipe to something new, kudos to them that they consulted the public enough to get the taste agreeable to most open-minded eaters, however you have thrown all that hard work away with labelling it with a name that bears no significant connection to our culture, nor to Kraft as a brand. I was really hoping that at least "mite" or "vege" would have been put in the new name. It seems like your marketing team have tried to be a little too trendy and unfortunately it has blown up in their faces, and to add insult to injury, this unfortunately is not a short-term promotion that will some day be forgotten, this is going to be etched in the memories of modern Australians as the time an iconic Australian product was buggared up a beauty!

Should have been called CheesyMite, as its cheese spread and vegemite mixed together. What on earth has the computer generation got to do with it. What a stupid name. I will continue to call it "Name Me", as my kids call it when they ask for a sandwich.

Well I like it. I think its witty and modern. I snack :-) and it is Vegemite Version 2 after all. I think you'll find the small i for internet on a lot of things, not just Apple products. If you look on the jar it staill says Vegemite so there's no need to put "vege" or "mite" in the name. And no I don't work for Kraft....

Hmmmmmmmmm the name I created was actually the best of the lot.
But I sort of hated the name Isnack 2.0.... but as a marketing ploy for the current scene - it's very good and catchy...
I actually really like it.
But it lacks an enduring component..... it smacks of the flippant trend of rebadging everything every 6 months...
I'd prefer the name I created for it, as it's an enduring concept, and not a passing fad.

Easily the most bloody retarded name in history.
@Jenny, yes, the i suffix is in front of a lot of of things on the internet, but there is no doubt that it was coined by Apple, and now it is stupidly plastered on one of Australia's icons. How moronic. Every other country now has the opportunity to laugh at us for naming one of our icons "iSnack 2.0"
Enjoy failure Kraft.

I would never remember the name of this product. Why on earth would they call it this? Probably trying to be "trendy"!!
I have tried the new product and will not be buying any more. It is OK but nothing tastes as good as the original Vegemite...you cannot improve on perfection!
In my opinion this product will be off the shelves within 12 months.
Congratulations to the winner but it is definitely not a name I would have chosen..too hard to remember...needed something short and snappy!

It's a terrible name. Vegemite's a spread, not a snack - if they'd called it iSpread 2.0 at least it would have made sense.
You don't snack on a spoonful of vegemite, you put it on other things that are snacks, like crackers or bread.
the 'i' may not be exclusively Apple's, but it represents Apple products just as the Mac did a couple of decades ago. I can't think of any product that has *less* to do with computers and the internet than yeast spread with cream cheese.
If iSnack lasts as long as vegemite has, then the name will be even less comprehensible for the next generation when iPhones are a thing of the past and web 2.0 is as obsolete as the Commodore 64. Can you imagine anyone understanding the reference today if this product had been named in the 80's and was called Snack C64?

Awful, awful, awful name. I am truly embarrassed. What on earth was Kraft THINKING to come up with something so ridiculous, so pretentious?
Vegemite is iconic; this 'iSnack 2.0' is just crazy. The public should have been presented with a final 5 names to vote upon. Cheesymite, a suggestion I saw here, seems a much more fitting name
I suspect this product (especially with this awful new name) won't last too long on the shelves. I certainly won't be buying it. Not only do I prefer the original Vegemite, but I'd be mortified to have something in my pantry called 'iSnack 2.0'

wow why do people take things so seriously and personally, like come on its a spread. haha how on earth is vegemite a national icon? like wtf it american owned anyway, the original vegemite is still made just to let all those people know that have been complaining, someone said would france and america change their flag.. how on earth is vegemite have anything to do with our flag. and yes someone is right when they said other countries can laugh at us now.. cause we have people who think a food spread owned by an american company can be a national icon haha lol what a joke. I think kraft marketing has really won here, i mean how many other spreads have a whole blog devoted to them. but i duno there might just be a save peanut butter campaign on the web somewhere? lol dont take things so seriously people haha i cant stop thinking about it lol something you put on a slice of bread and people compare it to the australian flag and say its an national icon/treasure hahah wow

I actually don't mind the taste of it, but what on earth were they thinking with iSnack2.0...how ridiculous! Oh and since when was Vegemite only a snack? I eat it for breakfast and lunch and I'm not playing my iTunes while I'm eating it. I like cheesymite that someone wrote above, so it will always be cheesymite to me.

A completely innappropriate name - it doesn't match the product at all, is completely forgettable and out of date like the product will be in 6 months when technology moves forward - like calling it Sony Walkman Snack back in the 80s. How much did that cost to have all those "professional" advisors and marketing "experts" select that name.I could have done it for free!

At the end of the day I am staying loyal to the original taste of Vegemite.
But hey, What a stupid name........i-Snack 2.0
sounds like a circuit board on toast.
Like most NORMAL people I say it should have been called exactly what it is.
Its a Cheese and Vegemite spread = CheesyMite
Its not a snack......its a spread, something you put on bread or a cracker.
I wanna ...... CheesyMite sandwich. I wanna ..... i-Snack Sandwich.
I know what I'll be saying.

Okay, everyone is 'cheesed' about them putting 'i' on the product name which I guess has been pretty popular in the last decade (i.e. iProduct, eBusiness), But, don't you think putting 'mite' on a product is pretty much just as ridiculous? But it was something done at the time. You don't exactly see new businesses tagging 'mite' on the end of their name? I think people just need to relax, step back and enjoy the name .... it is pretty funny after all.
My new business is gonna be called: Compurtermite eBusiness iPublishing - what do you think?

Apparently Breville Registered the name iSnack in 2000. Perhaps this choice of name iis an infringement of that?
I understand that Mite & Vege were inevitably excluded from the suggestions. A point which probably should have been made known to the public when sending in their entries. I expect that Kraft were left with a very narrow field to choose from as a result.
Although it was crowd-sourced, the choice made is very much akin to Marketing jargon: A pun - I Snack Too/ second generation/snack - meaning it's not just a breakfast item. So it probably met the criteria listed on the marketing brief. But had that name popped up in a brainstorm, the team most likely would have been asked to expand on it, so that it seemed less computer focussed and dated but carried the same meaning.
All up it was a very curious result, with an incredible amount of free PR. Aussies are obviously very vocal about their icons.
Now that Kraft have mixed Cheese Spread with Vegemite, will they dare proceed with mixing Philly and Vegemite?

Simon Talbot's explanation of iSnack reflecting a call to action and 2.0 being a clear indication of product differentiation is great, assuming we are writting a marketing text book. Sadly it appears the marketing team have become too involved in the 'make up' of this new name without considering the fact that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Shocking name - expect to see it won't last.
