Coffee retailer Bean Drinking, of Crows Nest in Sydney, has launched its own brand of coffee, called ECO.

It is a decision taking into account the environmental impact of coffee harvesting and trading.

“Coffee is the world’s second most widely traded commodity, and as such its production has grown significant environmental and social impacts in the countries where it is grown and harvested,” said Bean Drinking owner Keith Reay.

“Many consumers are aware of this and are looking for alternatives which not only offer a fairer deal to the farmers growing the product but also look to proctect and nurture the natural environment of the country in which the coffee is grown.

“The coffee beans in ECO are selected for their taste, but the roots of the coffee run far deeper as every one of the beans in ECO is Rainforest Alliance Certified and is therefore grown under superior environmental and social conditions.”

The Rainforest Alliance certification combines good environmental practice with good social practice ensuring both worker and environment are taken care of.

Bean Drinking is the winner of the 2007 Village Green Sustainable Cities Environmental Reduction Award.
