Vegetarian fast food chain launched in the US
Vegetarian fast food chain launched in the US

US restaurant group Zen Burger aims to revolutionise the fast food world with a chain of vegetarian outlets.

The first Zen Burger fast food restaurant has opened in New Yorks' Lexington Avenue. It specialises in meatless comfort foods that copy those sold in traditional fast-food chains, such as the ZenSausage breakfast sandwich, ZenBeef burgers, crispy ZenChicken sandwich, ZenTuna sandwich, ZenHotDog, ZenChicken tenders, ZenShrimp and French fries, as well as organic soups salads.

Zen Burger founder, James Tu, plans to take the chain nationwide, with the next restaurant slated to open in Hollywood.

While vegetarians make up a small but rapidly growing segment the US population, "flexitarians" --those who eat a vegetarian diet some of the time, but not always -- are a much larger group and the company's real target.

A so-called flexitarian is an omnivore, nothing
more, and it's healthful, delicious plant-based
cuisine that should inspire a vegetarian revolution. We wish the Zen food line the best of luck. In the age of global warming, one has
to be asleep to not understanding the ethics
and environmental importance of shunning animal products.

This is great. I hope you do well. I really would like to walk in a place and eat a great meal that I did not have to cook and enjoy it because it has no problem from the supply side. I never know how much harm has come from food in a non vegetarian place like we are seeing now.

This is terrific news - I sense an ever-increasing interest in veganism and in re-sensitizing ourselves to the beauty of animals and this precious earth. The old ugliness of burgers and the horrors inflicted on animals and children are fading fast! It's up to us to make meaningful changes!

Sounds good! I hope that all, or at least most, of the items are completely animal-free. After all, the egg and dairy industries are just as cruel to animals (if not more so) than their counterparts in the flesh industries.

Many years ago when I lived in New York City there were 'Dairy restaurants" which served Mock steak, Mock lamb Chop, etc made from gluten and flavourings.

Is Zen just a modern version of those vegetarian restaurants?

I agree with Friends of Animals that "flexitarians" are simply omnivores, however, we should encourage any reduction in animal product consumption - with the final goal, or course, being veganism. Anyone who want's more info on becoming vegan, or taking steps towards being vegan, can request a free Vegan Starter Pack at www.veganstarterpack.com

Toronto, Canada, could really benefit from one of these. Similar to another poster, I hope there is consideration for the ommision completely or deliberate choice of suppliers who treat their egg/dairy producers in VERY strict compliance with ethical attitudes and practices. Organic? If my cow were sick and needed antibiotics I wouldn't sacrifice quality of life for a profit margin. I'm wondering how this chain can survive without the mass production for lower prices which makes anything fast and cheap. I'm certainly willing to pay more and prevention of suffering is priceless. I wish all the best to anyone aiming this direction.
