Woolworths has become the first major retailer to stock One water, the ethical water brand which donates 100 per cent of profits to fund sustainable water projects in developing countries.

“One water will be stocked in 770 of Woolworths’ 800 stores, providing more choice for customers in our bottled water range,” said Greg Roberts, business manager of beverages at Woolworths. “One waters’ concept is impressive and provides a simple solution to a global issue.”

One billion people in the world don’t have access to clean drinking water, and two million people die each year from drinking contaminated water.

All profits from One water sales go to the installation of unique PlayPump and SkyHydrant water systems, which provide communities with clean drinking water.

“By switching their usual bottled water brand to One water, Australians can now directly help provide clean, safe drinking water to villages and schools in Africa and Asia,” said Alicen Spencer, CEO of Global Ethics, Australia. “Eighty-two per cent of Sydney’s bottled water drinkers would change their brand if they knew 100 per cent of the profits were going to clean water projects.” (Research conducted by MRA Research in 2008 on behalf of One water)

“We’re not trying to grow the Australian bottled water market, we’re just asking current buyers to make an educated purchase and unite as one to support this amazing campaign, where everyone wins by drinking One water,” said Spencer.

PlayPumps are children’s roundabouts, and as children play, water is pumped out of the ground into storage tanks which are connected to taps. Each PlayPump provides clean water for up to 2,500 people. The PlayPump also doubles as playground equipment and guarantees ‘a child's right to play’. SkyHydrants filter and purify drinking water, reducing the risk of water-born diseases in communities that ordinarily have contaminated local water supplies.

Fantastically exciting times for One water in Australia and a brilliant partnership to jump start life changing activities there.

Well done to Alicen and many thanks to Greg.

I totally support proceeds going to sustainable causes like this. The playpump idea and others like it are revolutionary and could change the way we treat life's most precious resource. Unfortunately, I wish that One water would do this without the use of plastic and do more things like sell stainless steel canteens to promote alternatives to bottles that inundate our landfills. Corporate Accountability's taken similar action with its Think Outside the Bottle campaign, www.thinkoutsidethebottle.org , why can't One Water do the same?

Great news for Australians who can now buy One water to help fund vital water pumps, bringing clean free local water to communities in Africa and Asia and enabling children to attend school instead of carrying water.

One water has a version of the campaign you mentioned and will be making a global PR announcement on a new environmental initiative later in the year. We're with you on this one Jeremy.
