Woolworths is ready to take on the banks, releasing a statement reminding shoppers that they can withdraw cash from its checkouts, free of charge - and without making a purchase.

Woolworths Spokesman, Luke Schepen said: "It's the secret that the big banks don't want Australians to know; fee free cash withdrawals are as close as your nearest checkout."

Schepen said that on average, one in three EFTPOS transactions at a Woolworths supermarket involved the customer opting to take cash out.

"Each year, 80 million cashouts are provided to Woolworths customers free of charge. This equates to 220,000 cashouts per day," Schepen said.

"Woolworths customers can receive a cashout without even making a purchase. Simply ask a Woolies checkout staff member or press the 'cash withdrawal' button on the self serve checkouts.

"We know some customers believe it's bad etiquette to ask for cash without buying anything, but it's a service we're happy to provide.

"Even if customers feel obliged to buy something, they can pickup their local newspaper and an apple and it would still work out cheaper than some ATM fees," Schepen said.
